Restrain Desire

Pastor Joel
Message Title: Restrain Desire based on Exodus 20: 17 and Hebrews 13: 5. Today ends the series on "Love God, Love All." I hope God has taught you two things. One, the commands point us to our need for a Savior. We can not keep them perfectly. Two, I hope the commands have reignited your desire to love God and love others by obeying His top ten list. As the plaque says in a friend’s kitchen, “They aren’t the 10 suggestions." In obedience to the commandments, we are blessed with freedom for the commands are really about loving God and loving others. Here’s a quick story regarding today’s teaching on command number 10, “Do not covet. . . .” One day young Charles Darwin was eagerly holding one rare beetle in his right fist, another in his left and then suddenly he caught sight of a third beetle that he simply knew he must have for his collection. What to do? In a flash he put one of the beetles in his mouth for safekeeping and reached for the third beetle with his now free hand. But the mouth-imprisoned beetle squirted acid down Darwin’s throat--so that in a fit of coughing he lost all three beetles. --James S. Hewett, Illustrations Unlimited. Coveting is like that. We quit focusing on what we are blessed with to desperately seek that which we do not have.

Love God - Love All

Series entitled:” Love God Love All.” It a series based on the 10 commandments. The 10 commandments are God’s will for humans. God’s will for us is not first of all some individualized plan that yields a spouse, a meaningful job, 2 vehicles, a 3000 square foot home, and 82 years of life. God’s will is first of all this will; these 10 regulations and stipulations in which He commands that the people of this earth frame their lives. These 10 are so big, so broad that in the Hebrew and Greek language they are literally called the “ten words” or the “10 things.” The ancient Jews did not call these words the “10 commandments” b/c they understood these injunctions as broader than just a common list of 10 simple rules. These 10 words were to be a way of life, a means to show love to God and to all. They were valued words. Respected words. The 10 words were LIFE itself. Let’s dig in this summer to these life giving “10 words.”
