What Christ Thinks of the Church - Current Sermon Series

In William Youngs popular novel, The Shack, Jesus makes the statement that He doesn't particularly like the Church. Is that true? In a day when the emerging church movement seeks to separate Jesus from His Church and Christianity, Jesus has never gone back on the promise that He would never leave or forsake His disciples. In the next phase of our exposition of Revelation we learn what Jesus really thinks about the Church. For seven weeks beginning November 16th '08... Join us!

Current Study: Sacred Romance - Newport Women's Fellowship

In The Sacred Romance, inspires readers to enter into the greatest romance of all time--one with God. Many Christians have tried to satiate the hunger of their hearts by substituting the love of God with things from this world. Since "our heart is the key to the Christian life," this often leads to spiritual stagnation and unhappiness, while God, the "Great Lover," attempts to lavishly adorn us with His perfect love. Doubting God's goodness coupled with fear of trusting Him blind the believer and prevent him from being wooed by God into a rich relationship. Life can soon become empty, cold, and worthless. Through personal narrative, Curtis and Eldredge take turns convincing the reader not only that God is good, but that recklessly abandoning oneself to Him results in a fulfilling life of abundance and awe. In this portrayal of God's character, the obvious error lies in believing that He could need anything from His creatures, or that He could be "hurt" by their unrequited love. On the whole, however, this is a call to a more passionate relationship with the lover of our souls.

12/04/2006 Worship Song Chosen in Celebration - Pathway Community Church

Dec. 4, 2006—Pathway Community Church, a Christian Reformed church plant located in Newport, Maine, knew that it had a talented worship team on its hands. But the level of that talent reached new heights when a song written by the team’s leader, Amy Brown, was given honorable mention in the CRC’s recent song contest.

Brown’s song, “Our World Belongs to God,” was one of five picked by the CRC’s 150th anniversary committee to be included in celebration events throughout 2007. The inspiration for her song came from Our World Belongs to God, a contemporary testimony of the Christian Reformed Church.

The Pathway worship team, called ALL OUT, consists of Brown, the leader and main singer, Pete Holman on drums, Ethan Brown on bass guitar, and Tony Brown on keyboards. The team recorded “Our World Belongs to God” and one other original song for a new worship CD.

Through the sale of donated items, Pathway Community Church has raised $587.43 for Newport area families who are needing food for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Tina Watrous, the coordinator of a multifamily tag sale, announced the amount raised in the morning worship gathering today. This is the first step toward developing a fully operational food distribution center for working families who are not able to access current food/hunger resources in the Newport region. The first steps are always small. It is the goal of Pathway Community Church to feed ten families for Thanksgiving and fifteen families for Christmas.

A landmark in Newport closed last month- Hawaiian Paradise Restaurant has been a favorite place for many since the mid 1980s. Pathway Community Church plans to move into this location within the next two months, depending on renovations and code updates. This space will enable PCC to more than double its sanctuary seating, provide two large rooms for children's ministry, a nursery, kitchen, and spacious hospitality and welcome areas. The higher visibility of the location and its inviting atmosphere is hoped to assist PCC in building stronger connections within the community.

On October 15th, the Launch Team at Ecclesia made the decision to change the name of the church to Pathway Community Church. While Ecclesia, meaning 'the called out ones' or 'the gathering', described the people meeting in small groups, it no longer described who we are becoming. Pathway Community Church is a church that exists to make a difference in the community by revealing the grace and mercy of God.

Thanks for stopping by our web site.

Pathway is a diverse community of people living throughout the greater Newport area who seek to live out the love, acceptance and forgiveness of Jesus Christ with one another and those around us. Our focus is on "spirituality that works in the real world" - a Christian faith that is authentic, not overly religious and that meets the needs of ordinary people. That is who we are - ordinary people from various walks of life, sharing life together in Christ. We are on a journey with Him, and we've decided to do that together in community.

We'd love to invite you to experience our community through our Worship Gathering which we gather for each Sunday at 10:30 AM. It is a "come as you are party," so no need to dress up. We hope to see you then.

The first great church planter in church history, the apostle Paul, tells the people of Philippi that he is thankful for their partnership with him in the ministry of the gospel. We are looking for partners in this endeavor build a new church at the crossroads of Maine. We are looking for partners who will pray for us and for partners who will help us financially.

The total cost of our next phase of growth is approximately $40,000. Our prayer is that Pathway Community Church will be totally self-supporting and will have begun supporting future church planting efforts in our region by 2010. Please consider partnering with us financially.

We have found a new location! [See right] The new facility is a well known restaurant that recently closed and the space has been renovated to suit us. Our new landlord has asked us to partner with him for $20,000.00, just under 25% of the total cost of the renovations. This includes an unforeseen need for a $38,500 sprinkler system installation.

We are also raising another $20,000.00 to assist us with the transition of moving into a space that has significantly higher costs than our current location. This amount will subsidize our monthly expenses until we grow into the new location and become self supporting.

As of May 4th, a total of $4015.00 has been raised within the Pathway Community Church family. Matching donations and pledges from outside of PCC bring this total to approximately $9000.00. So we are well on our way to raising the first 25% of our $40,000.00 goal.

Please consider partnering with us. Call Pathway at (207)368-9977, write us at the address on the right of our home page, or email us info@pathwaycrc.org.

Prayer of Repentance - Prayer Vigil Resources

We used Psalm 32 as a guide for our prayer station on repentance. Because it was Holy Saturday, we placed this station at the altar, which had been draped in black. Once again, we had a few candles as well as a floor lamp for lighting. For visual aids we used the book, Rembrandt's Jesus: Meditations on the Life of Christ by Tony Maan, leaving it open to the painting Descent from the Cross, and placing a crucifix beside it. In the past, we have posted the Solemn Reproaches on the wall above. For some, the idea of a crucifix might be unappealing, but we have found it a very moving and appropriate accoutrement for Holy Saturday. We also placed a crown of thorns and a vase full of old dried palm fronds on the floor beside the altar. The prayer guide for Psalm 32 is available here.

For this prayer guide, a few extra materials are needed: A stack of thank-you notes on the altar and a shredder on the floor beside it, plugged in.

Hannah's Prayer - Prayer Vigil Resources

Hannah's story is found in 1 Samuel 1-2:11. Our first prayer station used it as a focus on faith and patience. The guide we used can be found here. Permission has been given for use as church-wide or personal prayer.

To set up Hannah's station, we placed a small table and chair against one side of the sanctuary. The table contained a candle, communion elements, and the prayer guide. We placed a lamp beside the table that shined up at the ceiling. This gave enough light to read by, but still kept the calm, quiet atmosphere. Because our prayer vigil took place on Holy Saturday, we wanted to have reminders at each station of the crucifixion. We hung a print of Giotto's The Deposition, as well as the description of the work, on the wall over the table. We found the print in an old art book that we were willing to cut up. Old art books can be a wonderful resource for your prayer vigil. Another excellent resource is BiblicalArt on the www. The painting used in this article is Hannah Giving Her Son Samuel to the Priest by the Dutch painter Jan Victors.

Setting the Atmosphere - Prayer Vigil Resources

Up to this point, we have had only one person in the prayer room at a time. In the beginning, this was necessary because we had so few people and so many time slots to fill. Today, it continues to be necessary as we have come to see that the experience of spending a whole hour alone with God is a remarkable one. So, rather than add a second person to the room, as we grow we are adding a second prayer room.

For the prayer vigil, the church is converted into a house of prayer. We rearrange furniture, have quiet music playing, keep our voices in quiet tones. Because a 24 hour period runs through the night, we have volunteers who stay (and sleep) in the church so that those who are coming and going at 2 or 3 in the morning feel secure. Having a volunteer or two always there also helps if the participant has any questions.

We offer a small selection of non-intrusive music cd's (i.e. classical, worship, nature sounds) and a cd player for the participant to listen to. Many people find it easier to talk aloud to God if there is no fear of being overheard. It also cuts out any noise outside the room that might be distracting.

On the door to the prayer room, for our last vigil, we posted these instructions. Inside the room, we had three prayer stations set up. Below, you will find two of them described in more detail, including the guides that were created to help the participant spend an hour in prayer. The red book that we mention in the instructions is a journal for anyone participating to be able to jot things down that they would like to share. We place this book, a stack of paper, a bunch of pens, and a box of tissues on a small table just inside the prayer room door.

"Nobody can force the soul of a community. The only possibility open is to create conditions in which the community can freely develop and discover the ways that lead to redemption." ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen

LIFE Groups are simply this: small groups of people gathering regularly within the body of Pathway Community Church to substantiate and promote the overall spiritual health of Pathway. These relationships create conditions within the body of Christ for individuals to experience the transformational truth of what Jesus taught.

Pathway Community Church is a place for people who have given up on church but not on God. It is not your usual church. We seek to love, respect and care for one another as a demonstration of our love for God.

Our outreach is to those who have no church home. Many in our area are disillusioned with religion. They have felt the sting of legalism with its impossible demands. Some have seen hypocrisy. Others have had no religious background and therefore see Christianity as irrelevant.

At Pathway Community Church we seek...

To love God

To love others

To make disciples

May my prayer be set before you like incense

may the lifting up of my hands

    be like the evening sacrifice

                Psalm 141:2

At Pathway, our prayer vigils have been some of the most meaningful experiences we've had as a congregation. We hold one on Holy Saturday and another near the beginning of the New Year. Those who have participated in past vigils have become some of our most enthusiastic promoters. At our last vigil, in April, we had very few extra hours to fill. Even those went quickly, though, as some people exiting the prayer room vied for a second hour!

Not willing to keep a good thing to ourselves, we have set aside this space on our website to give other churches a few ideas to enrich prayer vigils. We would love to hear from you, as well! Email any congregational prayer vigil experiences or suggestions here that you would like to share with us or with others. Scroll down this page to read how we have organized our vigils.

Old Roots, New Branches - Who we are

Pathway Community Church is one of nearly one thousand Christian Reformed Churches across the country. We are a church that professes Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, which is the source of the word "Christian" in our name. The word "Reformed" in our name refers to the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century during which the Protestant Church was born. Along with other Christian Churches, we teach that:

•	The Bible is the only reliable guide to what we should believe and how we should conduct our lives. It shows us who God is by telling us the great things God has done.
•	God saves us by grace, by His acts of kindness and love. Only Jesus' sacrifice on the cross can make us right with God. The good we do is the result of our salvation, not its cause.
•	God created us in His image, but because of sin, we were alienated from God. That alienation is removed only by accepting God's gift of salvation by faith in Christ.
•	While we believe that contemporary language and music is the best way to communicate God's truth for today's culture, we also believe that the message is as old as the Bible itself.

Pathway Community Church: biblical doctrine - Our Vision & Mission

The Scriptures

We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be the verbally inspired word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original wiritngs, infallible and God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; Matthew 5:18; John 16:12,13).

The Godhead

We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons-- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; co-eternal in being, co-eternal in nature, co-equal in pwer and glory, having the same attributes and perfections (Deuteronomy 6:4; 2 Corinthians 13:14).

The Person and Word of Jesus Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man (John 1:1, 2,14; Luke 1:35). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice, and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead (Romans 3:24; 1 Peter 2:24; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:3-5). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest. he fulfills the ministry as Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Acts 1:9, 10; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 9:24; Romans 8:34; 1 John 2:1-2).

The Person & Work of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and that He is the Supernatural Agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the Body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them until the day of redemption. (John 16:8-11; 2 Corinthians 3:6; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 5:18)

The Total Depravity of Man

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam's sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; man is totally depraved, and of himself completely unable to remedy his lost condition (Genesis 1:26, 27; Romans 3:22, 23, 5:12; Ephesians 2:1-3, 12).

Salvation

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins (Ephesians 2:8-10; John 1:12; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18-19).

Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers

We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God's power and are then secure in Christ forever (John 6:37-40, 10:27-30; Romans 8:1, 38-39; 1 Corinthians 1:4-8; 1 Peter 1:5). We believe that it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God's Word which clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion to sin (Romans 13:13-14; Galatians 5:13; Titus 2:11-15).

The Ministry and Spiritual Gifts

We believe that God is sovereign in the giving of spiritual gifts. It is, however, the believer's responsibility to attempt to develop their sovereignly given spiritual gift(s). The baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs at conversion and is the placing of the believer into the body of Christ. We also believe that particular spiritual gift(s) are neither essential, nor do they prove the presence of the Holy Spirit, nor are an indication of deep spiritual experience (1 Corinthians 12:7, 11, 13 & Ephesians 4:7-8). We believe that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith, in accordance with His own will, for the sick and afflicted (John 15:7 & 1 John 5:14-15). We believe that it is the privilege and responsibility of every believer to minister according the gift(s) and grace of God that is given to him (Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 13; 1 Peter 4:10-11).

The Church

We believe that the church, which is the body and espoused bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of all born-again persons (Ephesians 1:22-23, 5:25-27; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14; 2 Corinthians 11:2). We believe that the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures (Acts 14:27, 18:22, 20:17; 1 Timothy 3:1-3; Titus 1:5-11). We recognize baptism (of believers & covenant children) and the Lord's supper as scriptural means of testimony for the church (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:41-42; Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Colossians 2:11-12).
